IBN IY S (1448-1524)

Auteur d’une histoire de l’Égypte sous les derniers mamlouks et les premiers Ottomans, Ibn Iy s est le seul historien important de ce pays après Ibn Taghribirdi, auquel il ressemble d’ailleurs peu. Son traducteur français, G. Wiet, a donné à son ouvrage le titre assez juste de Journal d’un bourgeois du Caire. L’auteur y raconte en effet avec beaucoup de vie, au jour le jour, les événements petits ou grands qu’un Cairote moyen pouvait apprendre ou observer. Ibn Iy s est pratiquement pour trois siècles sinon le seul historien, du moins le seul historien de valeur de l’Égypte, et la peinture qu’il fait de l’effondrement du régime sous lequel il était né confère à son œuvre un caractère quelque peu tragique.
